Brahmi CapsulesMemory loss, slow reaction time, lack of concentration and mental clarity, anxiety, stress, etc. are some of the problems we face as we get older. This is due to the simple fact that along with our body our brain also ages.

Our brain comprises of around a hundred billion neurons that communicate with each other and other parts of our body by sending and receiving messages through a system of nerve pathways. As we age, the connectivity between the neurons decreases which in turn results in decrease in brain functions. Fortunately for us, the decline in brain function can be arrested by making a few simple changes in our daily routine that will not only fend off mental ageing but also enable our brain to function at its peak throughout our life. The modifications in your daily routine that can be can be implemented to help you maximize your brain’s cognitive potential include:

  • Engage your mind by learning and performing new activities – Constant exposure to new activities like taking up a new hobby, learning to play an instrument, etc can stimulate the production of new neurons which in turn results in increased memory and learning ability.
  • Do tasks the hard way – we live in a time where things can be done without much effort with the help of multitudes of gadgets. Their efficiency in doing our work has lessened the need for us to use our brain’s cognitive skills, thus resulting in decline in our brain’s cognitive functions. By doing tasks the hard way instead of relying on gadgets can help our brain to stay fit throughout our lifetime.
  • Practice relaxation techniques everyday – it could be anything from listening to music to reading a good book. Spending a little time doing the things you love can help to make you more resilient to stress and reduce anxiety levels in our body.
  • Eat healthy – incorporate foods that are rich in antioxidants found in fruits, selenium found in Brazil nuts, omega -3 found in salmon, carotenoids and flavonoids found in dark green leafy vegetables in your diet to slow mental aging
  • Have herbal supplements that help in promoting brain health – consuming herbal supplements can provide protection against disorders like parkinson’s, alzeimers, etc. and help make a remarkably notable difference in your learning abilities, mental clarity, mood and memory power.

Brahmi – the effective Ayurvedic way to enhance your brain power

Ayurvedic herbs have been used to treat various disorders and ailments since time immemorial. Each Ayurvedic herb possesses a host of benefits that not only helps in treating the ailment without causing any adverse side effects but also, in most cases, help rejuvenate the body and provide nourishment.

Brahmi (Bacopa monniera) is one such Ayurvedic herb that has been used by Ayurvedic practitioners for almost 3000 years to enhance the cognitive functions of the brain which include memory, recall, attention, comprehension, problem solving, planning, etc. and other mental disorders like alzheimer’s, dementia, insomnia, depression, etc. Found in abundance in the Indian Subcontinent, this unassuming herb is used as itself or in formulations to treat various disorders, particularly that which affects the mental health of an individual.

Derived from the Sanskrit word “Brahman” meaning the “totality of life”, Brahmi contains various properties that strengthens the mind while soothing and relaxing it. It has been used as a brain and nervine tonic since ancient times. According to Ayurveda, Brahmi is said to enhance the three basic components of the mind, the Dhi – the power of learning, the Dhirti – the power of retention and the Smriti – the power to recall. It pacifies the pitta dosha, one of the three dosha that constitutes our prakirti (bodily constitution) and has sattvic qualities.

Five reasons why taking Brahmi capsules can make a healthy difference for your brain

Brahmi’s effectiveness as an herbal remedy for curing debilitating mental conditions generally brought by declining age has made it a popular herb of choice. Below are a few of the reasons why Brahmi has become one of the most sought-after herbs for enhancing brain power and treating various disorders.

  • It creates a balance in the amounts of the essential chemicals gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate within the brain thus producing a noticeable improvement in the intellectual capability of an individual.
  • Two active compounds – Bacosides A and B – found in Brahmi are said to improve the transmission of impulses between the nerve cells found in the brain, helping in long and short term learning and memory.
  • It contains properties that modulate levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in regulating moods, among other things. This is said to reduce the effects of stress and anxiety.
  • It contains antioxidant properties, which is one of the main reasons for its ability to enhance cognitive functions of the brain and also stall mental decline once a person grows old.
  • Its ability to stimulate dopamine receptors in the brain has made it a valuable tool in treating depression and disorders like Parkinson’s.
  • It is known to significantly improve reasoning abilities when taken in the prescribed dosage.

Brahmi comes in various forms, namely in the tablet, capsule, and powder forms. Consuming Brahmi in the capsule form is preferred by most as there is no bitter taste to it. Brahmi is best taken in the morning in a dosage prescribed by an Ayurvedic physician. Though Brahmi does not cause any known side effects, it should be only consumed after checking with a qualified physician.

Start with Brahmi capsules today and give your brain the power to function at its best throughout your life.

NeemWho wouldn’t want a skin that is clear, radiant and that which glows with health and vitality? Unfortunately, very few people are blessed with skin that is problem free. Skin problems affect both the sexes, irrespective of age. Acne, wrinkles, dry skin, tanning, itching, inflammation, skin pigmentation, etc. are some of the common skin problems faced by many.

Skin problems are generally caused by various external and internal factors which include:

  • Exposure to extreme hot or cold weathers
  • Stress
  • Over consumption of alcohol and excessive smoking
  • Diet which contains more refined and processed foods than natural ones
  • Low water consumption
  • Lack of proper sleep
  • Genetics

Fortunately for us, getting and maintaining a clear and problem-free skin is a totally achievable goal. Controlling our food habits and opting for natural remedies to treat skin disorders can go a long way in gaining a healthy skin without the need for loading your skin with artificial and expensive products.

Ayurveda and skin care

According to Ayurveda, our skin is the by product of plasma, muscles and tissues and consists of seven layers, each layer having a distinct function to perform which keeps our skin healthy. If these functions are affected, due to improper care, our skin gets damaged. This is one of the causes of skin problems in many people.

Another main factor for skin problems according to Ayurveda is when the three dosha (body energy) – the kappa, pitta and vata – that make up our body constitution, are out of balance. An improperly functioning metabolic system and sluggish blood circulation are the main culprits for creating an imbalance. If the metabolic system does not function effectively, it causes toxins (ama) to build up in the body causing a host of problems that affect our well being.

Ayurvedic physicians treat skin problems depending on the person’s constitutional dosha. Ayurvedic herbs and its formulations are prescribed depending on the body type to balance the dominant dosha.

Things that you need to do for a healthy skin

  • Eat food that nourishes the body instead of ones that only fill you up with empty calories
  • Practice regular skin care routine. Cleanse, tone and moisturize the skin using only natural products to reduce build up of toxins that are otherwise found in chemical products.
  • Massage skin at least weekly with a good herbal massage oil that suits your body type
  • Use products that are suitable for your body constitution
  • Build up a sweat by working out at least for 20 minutes everyday
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and help flush out the toxins from the body
  • Avoid late nights and get at least eight hours of sleep to give time for the body to replenish its stores
  • Beat stress by practicing relaxation techniques
  • Use herbs which have anti-fungal and antiseptic properties to fight off any skin infections as part of your skin care

Neem – the natural cure for skin problems

The unassuming neem tree provides health benefits to us that are far too innumerable to count. Every part of the tree is beneficial in some way or the other, making it one of the most popular herbs used to treat a variety of ailments that affects us. Its main use is as a beauty aid, used to obtain a healthy and glowing skin. Over the years, extracts of neem have been used in soaps, shampoos and make up products to enhance one’s appearance.

Properties that makes Neem a remedy for skin problems

Neem contains a host of properties that makes it one of the best herbs to fight skin problems and ensure a healthy skin. They include:

  • Its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antiseptic properties make it an ideal herb for treating acne and rosacea (a skin condition characterized by facial redness). Neem leaves boiled in water, strained and applied on affected portions of the skin is an effective remedy for this type of skin problems.
  • It possesses analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that reduces itchiness and soothes inflammation of the skin making it an ideal remedy for psoriasis.
  • Its antioxidant properties helps fight off signs of ageing and lightens and evens the skin tone for people suffering from skin pigmentation.
  • It acts as a moisturizing agent, keeping the skin moisturised and soft.
  • Neem contains antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties that can help in treating pimples. Neem leaf powder made into a paste and applied on the skin is an effective remedy for this.

ShatavariA healthy reproductive system in any man and woman is required to ensure a healthy offspring. An individual’s lifestyle, diet, genetics, pre-existing health issues, medications, etc. all play a role in affecting the reproductive health of a person.

Failure to conceive has become one of the most common reproductive problems suffered by women. The increasing pressures of daily life have made it nearly impossible to follow a healthy lifestyle and diet contributing immensely to this problem.

According to Ayurveda, reproductive health can be maintained only if the reproductive tissues (shukra dhatu, the seventh and the last dhatu), are well nourished and healthy. This in turn can be achieved only if the other six dhatus (rasa- plasma, rakta-blood, mamsa-muscle, meda-fat, asthi-bone, majja-bone marrow) within the body, functions properly and are healthy. The proper functioning of the dhatus depends on a healthy metabolism. Poor metabolism creates an imbalance in the kapha, vata and pitta dosha, leading to accumulation of toxins (ama) and poor nourishment of the body tissues which affects fertility.

According to Ayurveda, the main causes of infertility and other reproductive problems are:

  • Stress
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • A vata – vitiating diet and lifestyle
  • Accumulation of toxins
  • Improper management of sexual energy
  • Damage to the reproductive tissue

Hair O Max

Hair O MaxFor times immemorial, the beauty of Indian women has been epitomized by long lustrous hair. But, the sad reality today is that, as the standards of healthy living degenerated, our quality of hair has also taken a beating. Few Indian women today can boast of the shiny tresses that adorned the women of yesteryear

Ayurveda states that disturbances in the metabolism and body constitution , affects the health and quality of hair. This theory is justified when we probe closely into our lifestyle…

The major contributing factors that cause hair afflictions are stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalance, certain medications, and harsh chemicals . Widespread pollution and the bad quality of water also plays a hand in hair diseases like premature graying, baldness, hair-loss, dandruff etc.

The increased stress and anxiety levels in today’s lifestyles, unhealthy diet etc aggravates the pita dosha in the body, which result in hair fall. Excessive consumption of spicy food, high fat food, food containing preservatives and additives damages the hair growth and structure. Hormonal imbalance in men and women causes the breakdown of hair follicles. Mainstream shampoos and hair products contain harsh chemicals and animal hormones that cause long term reactions on not just the hair but your physiology as well. Medications like antidepressants, birth control pills etc have an adverse effect on hair growth.

Ancient ayurvedic tenets reveal that healthy diet and lifestyle (Ayurvedic Ahar-Vihar), is intrinsic to lush and healthy hair.

A diet rich in protein and iron with adequate helping of raw vegetables, fresh fruits, salads, green leafy vegetables helps promotes the growth of healthy hair. Eating food that cools the body induces hair regeneration.

The frenetic pace of today’s life leaves minimal time for proper hair care. Accumulation of dirt on scalp prevents nutrients from reaching the hair follicle, a root cause of many hair diseases. Ayurveda recommends oiling and massaging the hair and scalp thrice a week. The benefits of a hot oil Ayurvedic massage are manifold.

  • A head massage is the greatest stress buster and it provides immediate relief.
  • The nutrients from the oil are absorbed by the hair follicles directly, nourishing the hair.
  • It cleans the scalp from impurities like dirt and dandruff.
  • It increases the blood circulation, improving memory.

Coconut oil, Amla oil, Brahmi oil, Arnica oil or Mustard oil are tried and tested massage oils with highly therapeutic properties .Honey also stimulates hair growth.

Specialized Ayurvedic preparations like Hair O Max fortifying oil help nourish the hair from the inside and, improving both its texture and structure. Its unique blend of medicated herbs replenishes lost nutrients to the hair follicles and restores the hormonal balance.

  • Bhringaraaja: A highly potent herb, bringaraaja can effectively reverse balding and graying. It promotes hair growth, and is an excellent stimulant.

  • Neem: Neem is a good antidote to dandruff and lice and purifies the blood.
  • Shikakai: Shikakai makes a great cleanser and hairpack
  • Ritha: Ritha is an organic cleanser .It washes the hair without stripping it off its natural oils
  • Ashwagandha: This is a powerful energizer, it rejuvenates the immune system, and restores hair growth

Traditional holistic rituals like Dhara, Abhyangam, Thala pothichil, Nasya etc have excellent therapeutic powers to rejuvenate the scalp and hair . In addition, it is advisable to use Ayurvedic tonics like Chyavanprash, Thikthakam kashayam, and Narasimha rasayanam, to improve the metabolism and enhance the glory of your hair naturally.
